Censors

This page is here to help webmasters understand how different configurations will affect how censors appear in the forums.

Censor All Instances

If only the word characters are entered, the censor will censor all instances of the character combination. Example:
censor list entry: "ass" output: *** (or other characters)
output of double entries of the word assass: ********
output of the word embarrass: embarr****
output of the word passage: p****age
output of the word assimilate: ****imilate

Censor Prefix / Censor Suffix

If the word is entered in the censor list with a preceeding space it will only filter single entries of the word. Example:
censor list entry: " ass" output: *** (or other characters)
output of double entries of the word assass: ****ass
output of the word embarrass: embarrass
output of the word passage: passage
output of the word assimilate: ****imilate

Censor Whole Words Only

Another possible way to filter unwanted words is to place spaces on both sides of the word. Example:
censor list entry: " ass " output: *** (or other characters)
output of double entries of the word (assass): assass
output of the word embarrass: embarrass
output of the word passage: passage
output of the word assimilate: assimilate

Final Note

These techniques will not hold true for all possible uses of filtered words. A word at the very beginning of a post will not be filtered in the case of having a space before the word since a space would not be present in that location. Each webmaster will have to decide how to filter each word entered in the censor list based on the needs of their community.
